The Rules to Genjutsu

This is a rather simple and brief explanation of how genjutsu operates and categorized on NW. First, for the sake of clarity, Genjutsu is the art of illusion. It allows those that specialize in the art to manipulate a victims senses to mislead or confuse them. Like with any art there are numerous types jutsu that deliver different results and because of this we have made a simple way to determine how each operates.

Some genjutsu are instant and will cause the victim to see illusions in real time. This means that rather than focusing on maintaining an illusion, the user puts forth the required amount only and once its cast its gone before posts in. This forms of genjutsu are the only forms that allow the wielder to attack while casting. These are referred to as Instant Genjutsu.

Genjutsu that attack the senses for an extended period of time (any that does not end at posts end) are called Continuous Genjutsu. These genjutsu require focus and stationary movement, meaning being attacked or thrown off concentration will end the genjutsu. Because of this, those that use continuous genjutsu are unable to attack physically since moving will end the genjutsu. A good example of this jutsu is "Kori Shinchuu no Jutsu - Sly Mind Affect Technique".

Countering

There are several options to combat genjutsu:

  • A victim's chakra flow, if disrupted enough, can break the caster's influence. This "genjutsu dissipation" (幻術解, Genjutsu Kai) can be done by the victim themselves, (assuming they realize they're under a genjutsu's influence) or an ally who emits chakra into them; jinchūriki who have formed a good relationship with their tailed beast enjoy the latter method whenever they need it.
  • Pain that is not caused by the genjutsu can bring victims back to their senses.
  • If a caster's vision is obstructed, such as by the Hiding in Mist Technique, that at least prevents the use of ocular genjutsu.
  • Possessing a Sharingan renders one largely invulnerable to genjutsu as their acute vision allows them to recognize its flaws and influence. They can also free others from genjutsu by inserting themselves into the opponent's illusion and release it. (Please be aware that they are still susceptible to genjutsu, they are just able to spot and react more quickly than those that don't possess it.)
  • Kikaichū, and other chakra eating animals or organic weapons, are impervious to genjutsu because their brain structures aren't sophisticated enough, allowing members of the Aburame clan or those like them (or wielders of organic weapons) a method to identify and counter genjutsu.
  • Strong smells, such as those from Chilli Pepper Bombs, can counteract genjutsu.

Just to provide a few examples. Depending on the genjutsu being used and the skill/ingenuity of the victim, one may discover other methods to break genjutsu. Be aware that these creative ways may require explanation. Always be prepared to do so.
